GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is a chronic digestive condition where stomach acid frequently flows back up into the esophagus — the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach.
This backward flow of acid is called acid reflux. When it happens regularly — more than twice a week — it may be diagnosed as GERD.
Common Symptoms
🔥 Heartburn
😮 Regurgitation
🤐 Difficulty swallowing
😤 Chest pain
😮💨 Chronic cough
🗣️ Hoarse voice
🤢 Nausea
😴 Sleep disruption
Acid reflux happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — a ring of muscle that acts as a valve between your esophagus and stomach — weakens or relaxes at the wrong time.
This allows stomach acid to travel upward, causing that familiar burning sensation in your chest or throat. Certain foods and drinks can trigger or worsen this by relaxing the LES or increasing stomach acid production.
pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The lower the number, the more acidic. The higher the number, the more alkaline.
0 Acidic
7 Neutral
14 Alkaline
🔴
pH 0–6 — Acidic
Can trigger or worsen acid reflux symptoms
🟡
pH 6–7 — Slightly Acidic
Consume in moderation — may cause mild symptoms
🟢
pH 7–14 — Neutral to Alkaline
Generally safe and soothing for the digestive system
What you eat and drink directly impacts your acid reflux symptoms. Certain foods and beverages can:
❌
Relax the LES — allowing acid to escape upward (coffee, alcohol, chocolate, fatty foods)
❌
Increase stomach acid — making reflux more intense (citrus fruits, tomatoes, spicy foods)
❌
Slow digestion — keeping food in your stomach longer (fried foods, red meat)
✅
Soothe symptoms — alkaline and low-acid foods help neutralize stomach acid (vegetables, oatmeal, almond milk)
💧
Drink water — still water helps dilute stomach acid and is the most pH-neutral drink you can have
🥣
Eat smaller meals — large meals put pressure on the LES and increase reflux risk
⏰
Avoid eating before bed — wait at least 2-3 hours after eating before lying down
🥦
Choose alkaline foods — vegetables, oatmeal, almond milk, and lean proteins are your best friends
📔
Keep a food diary — track what you eat and when symptoms occur to identify your personal triggers
🏃
Maintain a healthy weight — excess weight puts pressure on the abdomen and worsens reflux
